Is is time to break up with the bridal waltz?
The great thing about wedding traditions is that they don’t have to be traditional! Nanna might tuck a family heirloom, lace hanky into the recesses of your wedding dress (doubles for “something old” as well) and a pair of pastel blue Louboutin’s (a la Carrie Bradshaw) might peek out from underneath your wedding gown (no need to mess with that tradition when Louboutin’s are involved!) Not suggesting we tamper with awesomeness!
You can still retain the traditions, let’s say, the first dance, but instead of an unco box step to “Unchained Melody” (yawn), how about getting your bridal party to flash mob the dance floor, do a couple’s hip hop or maybe the groomsmen just wanna bust a move! Still laughing at this one – a wedding without Queen is just wrong!
If you are still fixated on using an Elvis number for your first dance, why not the mashup with Demi Lovato (oh so good), and have a few dance lessons with your loved one to make the boxie a bit spicier!
Why not all get in on it! Group lessons are not only a super fun way to enjoy the lead up to your big day and get your bridal party acquainted, your guests will love your surprise moves!
And do you only need to keep it to the reception dances? Nuh-uh. Back in 2009, Jill and Kev’s walk down the aisle went viral, with the bridal party breaking all the rules (bless), strutting, shimmying and somersaulting in church to the glee of their guests. The video is home grown and grainy, and only meant to be sent to those who couldn’t make it to their wedding. It now has more than 100 million views! (Don’t forget to tell your guests to put away their mobiles when the dancing is being done. This is your 15 minutes of fame for you to post!)
And while we are talking about zhooshing up dance traditions, how about we have a bit more of it on the night. For many of the guests, the best part of any wedding is dancing the night away. Let’s do away with the tossing of the bouquet (those flowers are too expensive to just toss!) and do people still do the whole garter thing? Let’s not. There – more dance time!
If your Spotify playlist is stuck in 2010 and you need some help, ask your guests to give you their fave wedding dance tune on the RSVP and if someone says Rick Astley (sigh), google mashups and you get this version. (Bless Avicii)
So, take these ideas (you’re welcome) and run with it, or should I say, dance with it!
