Tourism in Europe has been booming this year, and people are spending more nights in European accommodations than ever before, especially during the first half of the year. In fact, it’s the highest level of tourism in the past ten years.*
During the first half of the year, there were a whopping 1.19 billion overnight stays, which is 11 million more than in 2019 when there were 1.18 billion nights spent in European accommodations. The interesting part is that most of this growth is thanks to international tourists, whose stays increased by 22.5% compared to last year. In contrast, domestic tourism only grew by 5.8% in the same time.
Let’s take a closer look at the places that have become super popular among tourists:
1. Cyprus
Cyprus takes the crown with a massive 39.3% increase in visitors. Beyond its reputation as a relaxing beach destination, Cyprus offers a rich history, culture, and diverse landscapes.
Exploring both the Greek and Turkish sides of the island is easy, thanks to several access points and two pedestrian crossings in Nicosia. This mix of cultures also means you can enjoy a delightful blend of Turkish and Greek cuisine.
Cyprus also appeals to visitors with its beautiful landscapes and mild weather. From wild, windy beaches to family-friendly ones, you can enjoy various water sports. If you want a change of scenery, head to the inland areas with pine-covered mountains, lush valleys, and vineyards for hiking, biking, wine tours, and even skiing in winter.
The island’s history is a treasure trove of relics, including old dwellings, tombs, Roman mosaics, and various architectural wonders like Venetian walls, Byzantine castles, and historic churches.
2. Malta
Malta is the runner-up with a 30.5% increase in overnight stays. This is no surprise given its crystal-clear lagoons, charming villages, and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Valletta, Malta’s capital, is a historical gem with its Baroque architecture and city walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It’s affordable, and you can find great restaurants offering traditional Maltese food.
3. Slovakia
Slovakia takes the third spot with a 28.7% increase in visitors, which isn’t a shocker as it was considered one of Europe’s underrated destinations in 2019.
The High Tatras are a big draw, featuring a unique landscape with snow-covered ground and brown bears. You can also explore the old town in Bratislava and enjoy a beer while watching the world go by.
For your Slovakian to-do list, consider hiking to the top of Gerlach, boating on Strbske Pleso, and experiencing traditional hospitality in mountain huts at high altitudes.
The significant increase in overnight stays, especially from international travellers, showcases the enduring allure of Europe’s historical, cultural, and natural treasures. From the enchanting shores of Cyprus to the historic streets of Malta and the untamed beauty of Slovakia, these destinations are not only witnessing a surge in visitor numbers but are also becoming top contenders on travellers’ must-visit lists.
