Have you been sitting in the Aussie heat, while seemingly everyone you know got the nationwide memo to hit the glorious ski slopes in Japan this summer? Yeah, us too..
Well instead of crying into a blow up pool that is supposed to be keeping you cool, we have a secret to tell…Japan isn’t only worth visiting over their winter. In fact, we think the most beautiful parts of Japan are best to see from June to September.
If winter settles Japan in wonderful white snow, Summer is when colour and excitement truly take over this beautiful country. Imagine yourself wandering through streets immersed in folk dancing festivals, food markets, fantastic fireworks, float parades, flower fields and most importantly free-flowing Sake.
Festival season
Experience month long Matsuiri’s (festivals) such as Gion Matsuri in Kyoto or the one day Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka, to cultural shows like Akita Kanto Matsuri where people show their strength by balancing long poles strung with lanterns on their heads.
Watch as fireworks light up the sky during Sumida-gawa Fireworks Festival or participate in the traditional Bon-odori performed to honour one’s ancestral spirits during O-bon Festival at Awa-Odori Matsuri or Gujo-Hachiman. One thing is for sure, the Japanese certainly know how to celebrate.
Mt Fuji
Want something other than festivals? Try climbing to the base of Mt Fuji during the official climbing months for a once-in-a-lifetime memory and to experience the sense of camaraderie with hundreds of other adventurers across the world, ticking off this essential bucket list item.
Furano Flower Field
Lastly, head to the flower fields in Furano for a burst of vivid colour and the ultimate Instagram picture.
Offering hundreds of acres filled with lavender, german irises, pansies and more, this is truly not a sight to be missed.
So don’t just follow the crowd to the ski slopes, we here at Viva Travel encourage you to follow your own path (ideally through a flower field). Contact us today!
