With coronavirus restricting our travel options, now is the perfect time for a close encounter of the whale kind. Catch sight of the incredible animals at these locations.
Tasmania
Legend has it that the residents of the Hobart coastal suburb of Taroona often complained about being kept awake by the sounds of whales in the Derwent River, and it is still one of the best spots in Tasmania to spot the creatures. Both humpbacks and southern right whales can also be spotted off Great Oyster Bay, on the Freycinet Peninsula, as well as Frederick Henry Bay
Western Australia
If you’re a Western Australian whale-spotter, head to the state’s south coast to gaze on some southern right and humpback whales. Sip on a glass of wine in the Margaret River region while spotting the mammals off Augusta’s picturesque Flinders Bay. For a bonus, you can also clap eyes on a bottlenose dolphin in Geographe Bay in Dunsborough.
South Australia
Combine this whale-spotting location with a road trip! As you head into Adelaide from Victoria, stop off at Victor Harbour, roughly 80 kilometres south of the city, where you can spot an abundance of wildlife from Encounter Bay, including a variety of southern right whales, often with their calves. You can also book a tour to see the whales in the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Queensland
